The Association of Health Behaviors with Smoking in Women Workers

Abstract
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify health behaviors and analyze factors which association of health behaviors with smoking in women workers.

Methods: The subjects of this study were 1,455 women workers aged between 20 and 59 who had participated in the 2005 National Health Nutrition Survey. The instrument was composed of Health Interview Survey(HIS) and Health Behavior Survey(HBS) which were used in the 2005 National Health Nutrition Survey. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, ¥ö©÷-test, and logistic regression with the SPSS 14.0 for windows program.

Results: 1. Health behaviors of the subjects; 89.4% were none smokers and 7.1% were present smokers. 60.8% were soju 1-4 glasses for amount of alcohol drinking, 61.2% were nothing for stress, and 83.1% were no feeling for depression. 2. Variables which age, marital status, occupation type, educational status, health insurance, and household income were found to be significantly different in smoking status by general characteristics of the subjects. 3. Variables which frequency of alcohol drinking, amount of alcohol drinking, stress, depression, health examination, and subjective health status were found to be significantly different in smoking status by health behaviors of the subjects 4. Major factors affecting smoking or none smoking were depression, followed by frequency of alcohol drinking, amount of alcohol drinking, health examination, and stress.

Conclusion: Therefore, in order to reduce smoking rates in women workers, causes that related to factors affecting smoking should be identified and performed appropriate nursing interventions based on the results. Moreover, in order to induce desirable health behaviors, nurses need to develop health education programs concerning characteristics of workplaces, employers, and employees.
